Please note that his session deliberation will be released on October 16 for your follow-up and lessons learning. Below is a brief description of the content.
Session Description: Savings mobilization is still a key challenge, especially for microfinance institutions (more so for SACCOs) in many African countries like Ethiopia. Institutions have so far been focused on distributing credit. Mainly constrained by liquidity shortages to finance their credit programs, many institutions are now increasingly engaging in mobilizing savings. Yet, they are poorly structured for the task, with little or no attention to the potential (positive or negative) implications of household members’ relationships. There is evidence that women in the patriarchal system who do not feel that they have full ‘’control’’ of their earnings become reluctant to apply for credit for income generation, even when such services are available nearby and easily available. This requires not only tailoring products to the needs of potential clients but also designing proper communication and marketing strategies, as well as introducing gender transformative interventions. The session would explore key issues, and highlight some good practices.
